Food Drive

St. Joe’s Raises Over 2000 Items in Food Drive

Since November 1st, SJCHS has been tirelessly raising cans, paper products, and food to donate to St. Anne’s Homeless Shelter. To add a little friendly competition to the food drive, five teachers, Mr. Wood, Mr. Fendrick, Mr. Reinhardt, Mr. Johnson, and Mr. Ulle, decided to create the Beard-a-con. To promote the food drive, the five teachers pledged themselves to a beard-growing competition. Students then brought in cans and allotted them to whoever had the best beard. Competition grew fierce, with accusations of bribery and blackmail, while the prize for winning became more desired. At the end of the semester in December, the teacher in first place is able to keep his beard. Second place must have their head shaved; third place receives a Mohawk; fourth place a shaved skunk-stripe; and fifth place must have their head shaved in the fashion of a monk’s tonsure.

The school has raised over 2000 cans, paper supplies, and fresh produce so far! Mr. Ulle is currently in the lead, but anything could happen by Friday.
In a final effort to raise food, Principal Lambert and three of the teachers, Mr. Wood, Mr. Reinhardt, and Mr. Johnson, announced a “Camp for Cans”. On the night of December 19th, the four faculty members will camp out on the school grounds overnight. For every hour they camp, students can pledge a certain amount of cans. Because much of the food goes to St. Anne’s Homeless Shelter, the Camp for Cans is also to bring attention to the difficulties faced by the homeless in extremely cold weather.

Mr. Wood, currently in second place, said “We all wanted to end the beard competition and the food drive in an exciting way, and get the students involved. I’m so excited, because it’ll be a unique, interesting event to raise awareness of homelessness.”

All members of the community are encouraged to bring cans, food, and non-perishable items to the SJCHS Girls Basketball home game on Thursday, December 19th! As a united community, we can combat hunger and provide for those less fortunate.
